Public Housing Program

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Public Housing Program provides affordable, decent, safe and sanitary rental housing for low-income families, elderly, and persons with disabilities. Through a nationwide network of over 3,300 Public Housing Authorities, HUD assists approximately 1.3 million households that reside within a public housing program rental unit. Through Federal financial assistance that is provided through HUD, housing authorities are provided with a prorated subsidy amount to efficiently and effectively operate rental units under its jurisdiction. The Housing Authority of Joliet manages 394 Public Housing Program rental units that are located within three Public Housing Program developments and one Mixed Income Program development within the City of Joliet. Of the 394 Public Housing Program rental units, 383 are managed directly by the Housing Authority of Joliet and 11 are managed by Liberty Meadows Estates.
